Sacked MCA Habiba Hussein has been in and out of hospital

Senator Millicent Omanga has decried Nairobi County Speaker Elachi’s move to declare MCA Habiba Hussein’s seat vacant, terming the move reckless and irresponsible. She has defended the MCA, who as it now emerges, has not only undergone multiple surgeries but also lost a baby in the two-year period that she was not able to attend the plenary meetings. She went on to say that the MCA has been ailing for the longest time, her most recent hospital visit being in February 2020.

The embattled MCA underwent surgery to remove uterine fibroids, a procedure that can take up to 6 weeks to heal. She has also undergone a cholecystectomy to remove her gall bladder. Coupled with the loss of her baby who passed on within hours of birth, the Senator feels the Speaker should have been more considerate of the ailing MCA.

“It is beyond comprehension how Hon. Beatrice Elachi, the Nairobi City County Assembly Speaker and a fellow woman, allowed such a reckless and irresponsible statement to be made on the floor of the House, without a bother to demand for authentication of the wild claims that were made,” she wrote.

The nominated MCA had failed to attend plenary and committee meetings for a period of two years, which satisfies the provisions of Article 194(1) (b) of the Constitution and Standing Orders 242 (1) of the Nairobi County Assembly and Section 17(3) (h) of the County Assemblies Powers and Privileges Act, 2017 as grounds for removal.
