Becoming a mother in your teen years is one of the hardest things to deal with. If you are not feeling like a failure, you feel like you will never achieve your dreams. Then there is the challenges that come with being a new mother. Most teenagers do not have even the slightest clue of how to raise a baby.

While everyone has a different parenting style, the following tips can help you ease into your new role.

Seek advice

Parenting can be a lonely journey. Therefore, look for people that can help you take care of your baby and give you necessary support. Find time to go see doctors and other parenting specialists who will help you take up your new role and be a good mother to your child.

Stay positive

You do not have to beat yourself to death for having a child at a tender age. Form healthy relationships with those around you as you embrace the new life you are about to start with your child.  Work on positive communication with your parents, and partner where possible, and together work on how to go about raising the child.

Acceptance

You may never be able to move on with your life until you accept your new position as a mother.  Accept that it has happened and realise that you need to give love and attention to your child.

Look after yourself

Your health matters and your survival will be crucial for your baby's future. Do not give up on life because you have become a young mother- life has not stopped, it's just the beginning of a new phase. Looking after yourself mentally,emotionally and physically will  go a long way in ensuring your child thrives and grows well.

Finish your education

Studying will help you stay connected to friends and give you the ability to get a job and be able to support your child or family. With the right planning and support your will be able to manage school life and the same time look after your child in the best way possible.

Seek practical help

Being a young mother can be challenging especially because you may not know how to handle your baby. Seek the help of your mother, or a mature woman that knows their way around babies and learn from them. Such people will teach you how to feed and bath your baby, when to start your baby on solids and how to know when the baby is sick.Whatever you do, don't attempt to raise a child by yourself.

In a nutshell...

It is not advisable to get a child at a young age, but if it happens, take in your stride. Do not lose site of your dreams and do not beat yourself up. With a good support system, you can still raise your child and chase your dream. It won't be easy but it is possible.
