Saudi Arabia allows women to drive

Saudi Arabia has announced that it will be lifting the long-standing ban on women drivers.

For the longest time, men enjoyed the freedom of having licenses while women who deified the ban were arrested.

Saudi Arabia is an ultraconservative monarch governed by sharia laws. The laws enforce strict gender segregation rules particularly on women.

Saudi woman adhere to strict dress codes, non-engagement in sporting activities and those who want to obtain a passport or travel abroad have to seek consent of their husband or male relative.

The royal decree, from King Salaman Bin Abdulaziz stated that full change would be implemented by 2018. This will allow for women to be educated on how to drive and men on how to interact with women on the road.
