On Sunday, June 6, 2021 the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) launched Nairobi Women Regional League at the Ligi Ndogo grounds- this, after the federation introduced the women’s cup tournament across the country in February.

The launch, hosted by Football Kenya Federation NEC member Nairobi region Michael Majua Ouma, was graced by the Football Kenya Federation vice president Doris Petra, the CEO Barry Otieno and the women representative Margaret Omondi. Owing to the federation’s agenda of ensuring women football growth across the country, the FKF Vice President noted the steady rise in the number of women participating at the grassroot level.

“The Federation has done a commendable job in setting up the third-tier league, I would also like to urge other federations to follow suit so as to nurture the young girls in grassroot level who would like to pursue a football career,” said women rep Omondi.

The 20 Scriptwriters have undergone an intense four – week training based in Eldoret, Uasin Gishu County, by two notable Scriptwriters Ms. Mona Ombogo and Mr. Paul Ekuru. This has culminated in 20 individual scripts (10 for film and 10 for TV) as well as 3 group scripts (2 for film and 1 for TV).

First-round fixtures

There are 12 teams in the first season of the women’s regional league- City Queens, Uweza Women, Ruaraka Girls Academy, Ruai Queens, KU Desert Roses, Dad Star, Kariobangi Sports, McMillan Ladies, Lexus Ladies, Beijing Raiders, Mrembo and Kibera Queens.

To kick start the league, four matches were played on the day of the launch which saw teams such as Uweza and Acakoro massacre other teams.

The first-round fixtures included;

Lexus queens 0 – 10 Uweza women

Beijing Raiders 4 – 1 City Queens

Mrembo 0 – 3 KU Desert of Roses

Acakoro 7 – 0 Kariobangi Sports

Winners were guaranteed promotion to the second-tier Women Division One League. "The league will help in keeping alive the football dreams of young talents." said  the Federation Vice President, Doris Petra.
