Renowned Ugandan comedienne Anne Kansiime has opened up about a deeply personal chapter in her love life, revealing that she once paid her own dowry to meet family expectations , a confession that has surprised many.

Speaking during a candid conversation with Wonder Jr, Kansiime explained that despite being perceived as married in the past, she does not consider herself to have ever been a wife in the traditional sense. According to her, her former partner never fulfilled the dowry her parents had requested.

Kansiime was previously married to Gerald Ojok for four years before their marriage ended around 2017. She later began a relationship in 2018 with fellow artist Skylanta, with whom she welcomed a child.

Reflecting on her first marriage, the comedienne revealed that she ultimately paid her own dowry after her then-husband failed to meet her parents’ demands. Looking back, she described the relationship as more of an illusion than a traditional union — a realization that became clearer later, particularly when she struggled to conceive.

“I never truly became a wife,” Kansiime said. “I paid my own dowry and convinced everyone, including him, that we were married. But if a man doesn’t honour what your parents ask for, can it really be called a marriage?

She recalled introducing her partner to her family, who formally requested dowry, but he never followed through. Faced with pressure to maintain appearances and move the relationship forward, Kansiime said she took matters into her own hands.

“I paid the dowry myself, we moved on, and I forgot about it,” she admitted.

It was not until she turned 30 and began trying to start a family that she started reflecting more deeply on the situation. She said she questioned why she was struggling to conceive despite other blessings in her life, prompting her to reassess her choices.

Kansiime explained that her actions were driven by a strong desire to honour her parents and make the relationship work. She also longed to build a family, which influenced her decision at the time.

“I wanted to do things right and have a child so badly,” she shared, highlighting the emotional weight behind her decision.

Her revelation has since sparked conversations about cultural expectations, relationship pressures, and the lengths people sometimes go to in order to preserve love and family approval.
