The tragic story of Eugene Mutuku has deeply resonated across Kenya, highlighting persistent and grave concerns regarding safety within the public transport sector. Eugene Mutuku, a 19-year-old student at the Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) Yatta Campus, was in the final year of his studies. He had travelled to Nairobi to begin a clinical attachment at a hospital in Kasarani.

Tragedy unveils

On the morning of Friday, June 5, 2026, he was commuting along Thika Road when an altercation broke out inside a matatu operated by the Nicco Sacco.

The incident reports and witness accounts indicate that the confrontation began over a disagreement regarding fare, specifically a dispute over change. Tragically, the situation escalated, and Eugene was removed by being pushed out of the moving vehicle. A motorist driving behind the bus captured dashcam footage showing the moment an individual fell onto the road as the vehicle continued without stopping.

Eugene was rushed to the Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) by a good Samaritan, but he succumbed to severe head and body injuries shortly after.

Following the incident, the driver and conductor abandoned the matatu in the Kariokor area of Nairobi, switched off their phones, and fled. Police have since impounded the vehicle and have launched a manhunt for the crew members who reportedly switched off their phones to evade capture, with help from willing passengers who witnessed the altercation. Two officials from the Nicco Sacco were later arrested as part of the ongoing investigation.

National outrage

The incident has sparked a range of conversations concerning public transport safety, with it not being the first time a passenger has been harshly mistreated over fare issues. Many are questioning the culture of impunity within the matatu industry and demanding stricter enforcement of safety regulations by the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) and Sacco management.

A recurring tragedy

Eugene’s death has reignited national conversations about the value of human life versus petty fare amounts and the urgent need for a professionalised, safer public transport system. The family of Eugene Mutuku is currently seeking justice for their son, whose promising future in the medical field was cut short. His story has become a rallying point for those calling for systemic reform in how transport crews are held accountable for their actions on the road.
