The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) has officially opened the recruitment portal for secondary school teachers and college tutors to serve as contracted assessors for the upcoming 2026 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) oral and practical national examinations.

According to an official notice released by the council, the application window opened on June 22 and is scheduled to close on July 15, 2026.

The recruitment drive is part of the council’s early logistical preparations to ensure a seamless administration of specialised subjects. The targeted practical and oral papers include:

  • Power Mechanics Practical (447/2)
  • Electricity Practical (448/2)
  • Aviation Technology Practical (450/2)
  • French Oral Paper (501/3)
  • German Oral Paper (502/3)
  • Arabic Oral Paper (503/3)
  • Music Practical (511/1)

The council noted that the newly recruited professionals will undergo intensive, on-the-job training directly during the assessment period to equip them with the standardised marking and evaluation rubrics required for national examinations.

Key requirements for applicants

To qualify for the shortlist, KNEC has outlined strict eligibility criteria for interested educators. Applicants must meet the following baseline metrics:

Note for Existing Assessors: KNEC has explicitly clarified that teachers and tutors who are already enlisted in its active assessor database do not need to resubmit their applications

Step-by-Step application

The council has directed all eligible professionals to submit their forms exclusively online through the standardised portal before the fast-approaching deadline.

  1. Step 1: Access the Examiners Portal
  2. Navigate to the official KNEC examiners application platform via the official KNEC website.
  3. Step 2: Account setup and login
  4. Teachers with existing CP2 accounts should log in using their credentials. If the password has been forgotten, utilize the “Reset Password” feature by inputting your mobile number in the format 254 Educators without an account must select “Create Account” and follow the prompts to generate login details.
  5. Step 3: Complete personal profile
  6. Once logged in to the system, update and complete all sections of your personal and professional profile, ensuring all academic and TSC documents are accurately captured, then save.
  7. Step 4: Submit vacancy application
  8. Navigate to the user dashboard and click on the “Apply for Assessors’ Vacancies” tab. Select your declared subject area from the list of available slots and submit.

Critical timeline & funding context

Because application slots are strictly limited based on the personnel quotas required for each subject paper, candidates are urged to complete their profiles early to avoid late-stage system congestion.

The 2026 KCSE cohort represents the second-to-last group under the historic 8-4-4 education system before the country completes its historical transition to the Competency-Based Education (CBE) pathway following the final 2027 sittings.

To anchor these massive logistical operations, the National Treasury has adjusted allocations for the 2026/2027 financial cycle, proposing a substantial budget to KNEC to guarantee optimal exam processing and timely compensation for all contracted professionals.
