Kenyan Dark Honey Proven to Cure Coughs in Children

  • PublishedJune 4, 2018

A recent article by the Cochrane Review published in April, revealed a 10-year study by Aga Khan University Hospital in Nairobi. The study shows that, specifically dark honey found in Kenya, can cure coughs in children aged 12 months to 18 years.

Dark Kenyan honey has been found to relieve the symptoms of coughs, reduce the duration of a cough and even improve sleep. The medicine was administered 3 times a day for 5 days.

The study was conducted on 899 children from Israel, USA, Kenya and Brazil. The children were split into 3 groups where they were given, honey, cough medicine and placebo over a 10 year period.

Different types of honey from the Middle East, Asia, USA and Kenya were all used in the study, with Kenyan dark honey exhibiting the best results.

Kenyan dark honey was found to have an antioxidant that kills the oxidizing agents causing coughs. The darker the honey the stronger the antioxidants.

Parents have been warned against the use of cough syrups in children under the age of 2 years and  infants.

Honey has proven to even be cheaper than the conventional cough syrups given at the chemist or pharmacy. A 300 ml bottle of honey, costing  Kshs 618 will treat four children when with the same amount for cough syrup, will treat only one child.
