Citizen TV’s Victoria Rubadiri wins 2020 BBC World News Komla Dumor Award

Citizen TV news anchor Victoria Rubadiri is the winner of the 2020 BBC World News Komla Dumor Award.

The award was created in honour of BBC World News Presenter Komla Dumor who passed on in 2014 aged 41.

“Komla was a well-rounded journalist whose style, though authoritative, was also compassionate, empathetic and uplifting. His ability to give the facts comprehensively, and yet still be attuned to his audience, was something I admired and a skill I seek to emulate,” Rubadiri said.

Rubadiri is the sixth winner of the award and the second in Kenya after Waihiga Mwaura. Other journalists who have won the award are Solomon Serwanjja, Amina Yuguda, Didi Akinyelure and Nancy Kacungira.

The Sunday Live show host will undergo training for three months at the BBC Academy then later she will join the BBC News teams on TV, radio and online.

“I am excited at the prospect of learning new skills at the BBC to be able to connect with audiences locally, regionally and internationally, no matter on which platform the story is being told,” Rubadiri added.

It was Rubadiri’s eloquence and passion for telling African stories on traditional and social media that impressed the judges.

“We’re delighted to have Victoria on board to bring her insights and passion to the BBC,” BBC World Service Group Director Jamie Angus said.

Angus believes that Rubadiri will take after Komla with great ease.

“Komla had the incredible ability to give stories from the continent global resonance, and also deliver it with familiarity and understanding. We’re looking forward to seeing Victoria embody that by bringing her perspectives to life,” Angus added.
