On Monday, the Government of Kenya officially submitted opposition leader Raila Odinga’s application for the African Union Chairman (AUC) position in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

Through the Foreign Affairs Principal Secretary Korir Sing’oei, Kenya presented the documentation to the Dean of the Eastern Region, H.E Dharmraj Busgeeth.

“Under the authority of the Government of Kenya and as per the Statutes and Rules of the African Union Commission, we have today formally submitted requisite documentation of Kenya’s nominee for the Chairmanship of African Union, H.E. Raila Amolo Odinga,” Dr. Sing’oei stated.

The decision was informed by Raila Odinga’s Pan-Africanist credentials, his suitability and his vast network across Africa. Kenya stated that the ODM leader is the most qualified candidate for the position due to his previous experience in advancing the African agenda.

Among the documents delivered on Monday was his CV, which, as stated by the Office of the Legal Counsel should be submitted in six languages: Portuguese, English, Arabic, Kiswahili, French, and Spanish.

On June 5, 2024, in support of Raila’s candidacy, Kenya’s Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi presented a detailed campaign strategy. It involves setting up a campaign secretariat, conducting outreach programs to AU member states, and organizing a public debate to be broadcast live to African citizens six months prior to the election date.

Mudavadi confirmed the government’s dedication to ensuring Raila’s success in attaining the prestigious position.

“We have no doubt that the candidate will pursue excellence in line with the continent’s collective aspirations of the Africa we want in 2063 as framed in the AUC development framework,” he said.

The elections will be held during the 38th session of the assembly of heads of state in February 2025.
