Trump Wins 2024 U.S Presidential Election
  • PublishedNovember 7, 2024

Donald Trump, the Republican presidential candidate, has secured a historic second term as President of the United States, surpassing the critical threshold of 270 electoral college votes.

While speaking in Florida, Trump vowed to usher in a “golden age” for the United States, commending what he described as “the greatest political movement of all time.”

Trump made the most dramatic comeback in US political history. He survived two assassination attempts, has an unprecedented criminal conviction, his main opponent, President Joe Biden dropped out just months before elections and his former chief of staff claimed he is a ‘fascist.’

He campaigned on promises of tax cuts, reduced regulation, and the largest increase in import tariffs in almost a century, aiming to drive economic growth and revitalise manufacturing.

A majority of Americans in key battleground states chose to vote for him, with many citing the economy and immigration as their primary concerns. He gained positive attention through viral online moments that showcased his relatable charm like his surprise appearance at a McDonald’s drive-thru and an impromptu press conference from a garbage truck.

Trump faces charges for allegedly inciting the violent attack on the US Capitol on 6 January 2021. He had also been found guilty of falsifying business records.

Kamala Harris called Trump on Wednesday to concede defeat before delivering remarks at Howard University in Washington, D.C. She congratulated Trump and emphasised the importance of a peaceful transfer of power, as well as the need for the president to represent and serve all citizens of the country.

Had she won, Harris would have broken barriers as the first woman, second Black person, and first South Asian to be elected as president.

Meanwhile, Huldah Momanyi became the first Kenyan-born politician to hold office in the United States. Momanyi was running under the Democratic–Farmer–Labor (DFL) Party and won 64.78 per cent of the votes, securing a seat at Minnesota’s District 38A.

President William Ruto joined other world leaders in congratulating Donald Trump on his election as the 47th President of the US.

“On behalf of the Government and the people of the Republic of Kenya and on my own behalf, I convey my warmest congratulations on your election as the 47th President of the United States of America. We look forward to deepening our collaboration under your leadership as we work together to address global challenges, promote peace and security and foster inclusive economic growth for the benefit of our people,” he said.

Trump has become the first president in over a century to secure a non-consecutive second term.
