Sending a child off to university brings a mix of pride and worry. As students navigate late-night study sessions, group projects, and social events, ensuring their safe commute back to off-campus housing is a top priority for every parent.

Uber offers built-in family safety tools that allow parents to monitor rides in real time, enforce safety protocols, and maintain peace of mind while granting young adults their independence.
Here is a step-by-step guide to setting up and using these safety features.
Step 1: Set up a family profile
To oversee your student’s rides, begin by linking their account to yours through a Family Profile.
Open your Uber app, go to your profile, and select Account. Tap Family, then choose Add Member. Select your child’s contact details from your phone to send them an invitation link.
Once your student accepts the invite, their rides can be charged to a shared payment method, allowing you to manage funding directly.
Step 2: Enable “Uber for Teens” or trusted contacts
If your child is under 18, set up an Uber Teen Account during the invitation process. This dedicated account provides parents with live trip updates, real-time audio monitoring options, and mandatory safety checks.
If your child is 18 or older, set up the Trusted Contacts feature:
- Go to Settings in your Uber app and tap Safety.
- Select Manage Trusted Contacts.
- Add your child and set the app to automatically request trip status updates for late-night rides or every journey they take.
Step 3: Require PIN verification before every ride
One of the most effective safety habits for university students is verifying their ride before stepping into a car.
Encourage your student to enable PIN Verification in their app settings under the Safety tab. When active, the driver cannot start the trip until the student provides a unique four-digit code generated by the app. This step ensures your child never accidentally enters the wrong vehicle.
Step 4: Use real-time ride tracking
Once the Family Profile or Trusted Contact link is active, you do not need to ask your child to text you when they leave.
Whenever your student requests a ride, you receive a push notification. Opening the app allows you to follow their vehicle’s route live on a GPS map, view the driver’s name and license plate number, and monitor their estimated time of arrival until they reach their destination safely.

Step 5: Review safety tools with your student
Sit down with your student to go over the in-app Safety Shield icon, which appears on the map during every trip.
Teach them to use the RideCheck feature, which alerts both the rider and Uber support if the car makes an unexpectedly long stop or strays significantly off-route. Show them the in-app Emergency Button, which instantly connects them to local emergency services and automatically shares their live GPS coordinates and vehicle details.
Taking a few minutes to configure these features gives your university student a reliable way to get home safely, while keeping you informed every step of the way.
