Ocean’s 8 is a spinoff of the Ocean’s film series that is centered on a group of women led by Debbie Ocean (Sandra Bullock) who plan a grand robbery at the annual Met Gala in New York City. The film is impressive for switching up from the typical all-male cast and themes of feminism, crime and relationships.

Ocean 8 Premier

Ocean’s 8 premiered on June 5, 2018 and was released in the United States on June 8, 2018. The film employs clever use of flashback to tell the story seamlessly as well as tying well into the previous movie in the series. One also need not have watched the whole series to understand the flow of the movie which is extremely commendable.

The undeniable chemistry between the all-star cast makes it worth watching. The film attempts to vouch for the empowerment of women as well as unity among the gender. This a theme that can be difficult to bring out because of how sensitive it is and the possibility of being misunderstood yet Ocean’s 8 manages to do so with humour, class and a little bit of irony.

Ocean 8 Plot

The plot is somewhat dull and predictable for a crime movie. Moreover, the characters almost seem undeveloped as only their technical aspects are tapped into; being criminals, most lack personality or have no room to let it shine through. The lack of suspense and drama has been heavily compensated with style.

Sandra Bullock and Cate Blanchett put up a convincing act for this sequel. In a few scenes, the viewer is pleasantly surprised like the recruitment of Anna Hathaway. Her character, being one of the most personable ones, is fun and seemingly constantly evolving. If you’re looking for a good laugh, this isn’t the film for you. A sundowner and a few smirks? Maybe.
