They say food is the way to a man’s heart, but the truth is, it is the way to everyone’s heart. After a long week of trying to get into the rhythm of work, you deserve a break and most importantly, good comfort food.  Thankfully, there are plenty of Kenyan comfort foods to pick from. We’ve listed a few here: 

Nyama choma

One can never go wrong with nyama choma. Nyama choma is roasted animal meat e.g. goat meat, beef, chicken and fish. It can be eaten with kachumbari or accompany any dish you want. There’s nothing that livens people’s moods faster than tantalizing nyama choma

Maandazi

Maandazi is one of the ultimate Kenyan comfort foods. For most people, their fondest memories consist of waking up to the aroma of maadazis on the weekends. There is nothing better than maandazi to make you forget how bad your week has been. They hit all the right spots –  easy to make, goes with pretty much any drink out there and is delicious!

Beef stew with chapo (chapati)

Kenyan beef stew is usually also prepared with other ingredients such as carrots, peas or potatoes. If you’re not a fan of beef, you can replace it with other types of meat such as goat or chicken. There’s nothing better than a well prepared Kenyan stew with chapo.

Pilau

Pilau is one of the most popular dishes in Kenya and for good reason. It bursts with spices and tends to satisfy taste buds of even the most hardened food critics. It’s easy to prepare pilau for the family. This is perfect for the weekend and can be accompanied with kachumbari (tomato salsa) or salad.

Noodles

Instant noodles are popular because they take less than five minutes to prepare. Boil the noodles for two minutes only and they’ll be ready to eat. Bumbu sauce and chilli satchets come with the Indomie package, which are added to the dish to spice it up. This is perfect for those who don’t want to spend a lot of time in the kitchen.

Mutura

This is people’s favourite on a Friday and Saturday evening. Mutura is goat and cow intestine which is boiled until it is almost cooked and then thrown on the grill to achieve that roasted taste. It is served with kachumbari when hot.
