The family of late gospel singer Betty Bayo has opened up about ongoing disputes surrounding her estate and the custody of her children. Joyce Wairimu, Betty Bayo’s mother, has publicly declared herself the singer’s legal next of kin, warning widower Hiram Gitau, also known as Tash, against claiming any of her daughter’s property.
Speaking during a TikTok Live session with content creator Shiru wa Oakland, Wairimu emphasized her determination to protect Betty’s estate and safeguard her grandchildren. She called for an urgent postmortem to clarify the circumstances surrounding her daughter’s death and voiced concerns about the safety and wellbeing of her two children, Sky and Danny.
“I hope the authorities understand that Tash is not fit to stay with the kids in the house; it is not acceptable,” Wairimu said. She added that her relationship with the children’s father, Pastor Victor Kanyari, remains cordial.
Wairimu insisted that all official documents reflect her as Betty’s next of kin, including the death certificate, from which she wants Tash’s name removed. She shared that she had provided her ID to Tash in agreement that matters would be discussed formally after the burial.
“Betty’s possessions belong to her children, and my sole intention is to protect her estate and their welfare,” Wairimu said. She added that while some properties may have been jointly owned with Tash, Betty’s close friends, particularly Shiru Wa GP, can help clarify ownership.
On the contentious issue of custody, Wairimu expressed her desire for the children to be moved to a safer environment. She has urged Pastor Kanyari to initiate formal police procedures to transfer the children legally and recover important documents relating to them and Betty. While she may not be able to travel to Kenya immediately, Wairimu confirmed her plan to pursue the matter fully and ensure the children are relocated to live with her other daughter, Wanjiku, for safety and stability.
Responding to Wairimu’s statements, Pastor Victor Kanyari, the children’s father, urged Tash to heed her concerns and prioritize the welfare of the children. He stressed that the focus should remain on ensuring a safe and stable environment for Sky and Danny.
Tash is yet to speak on the matter.
In a tearful recount, Wairimu alleges that in the week before her passing, Betty had sent her an emotional message expressing fear and uncertainty about her wellbeing. “Woi woi Mummy, who did you leave me with over here?” Betty reportedly said.
Betty Bayo, who blessed many with her gospel music, passed away on Monday, November 10, after battling leukemia while receiving treatment at Kenyatta National Hospital.
Putting children’s welfare first
In sensitive cases involving estates and custody, the wellbeing of children should always come first. Families are advised to follow legal channels, maintain open communication, and ensure decisions are guided by what is best for the minors. Avoiding conflict and prioritizing the children’s safety can prevent long-term emotional and legal complications.
