Wanjira Maathai, a leading African environmental advocate and daughter of Nobel Peace Prize laureate Wangari Maathai, received France’s National Order of Merit.The prestigious award recognises her outstanding contributions to ecosystem restoration, climate justice and community-driven conservation.

She was decorated as an Officer of the National Order of Merit (Officier de l’Ordre national du Mérite) in a special ceremony held in Kakamega Forest, Kenya. The French Ambassador to Kenya presented the award on behalf of the French government, choosing the biodiverse forest setting to emphasise the environmental themes at the heart of Maathai’s lifelong commitment.

It recognises exceptional service in public, private, and international spheres and is frequently conferred upon foreign nationals whose work advances global values such as sustainability, justice and international cooperation.

Wanjira Maathai has built a distinguished career continuing and expanding her mother’s vision of environmental stewardship and social empowerment. She has served in key leadership positions with the Wangari Maathai Foundation and the Green Belt Movement, and currently works as Managing Director for Africa and Global Partnerships at the World Resources Institute.

Her efforts have focused on large-scale land restoration initiatives, including support for the AFR100 initiative, which seeks to restore 100 million hectares of degraded land across Africa. Through community engagement, women’s empowerment and youth involvement, Maathai has promoted practical solutions that link environmental health with improved livelihoods and climate resilience.

During the ceremony, the French Ambassador highlighted Maathai’s unwavering optimism and collaborative approach, noting her ability to bring together governments, communities and international partners in pursuit of sustainable development. Maathai, in turn, expressed deep gratitude and dedicated the award to her teams, describing the recognition as powerful encouragement for continued grassroots action in forest conservation and ecosystem recovery.
