There was a time when financial success was measured by how much you had saved, the investments you owned, or the security you had built for yourself. Today, success can look very different. It is brunches at expensive restaurants, weekend getaways, designer outfits, the latest smartphone and an aesthetically pleasing apartment.
Welcome to the era of the “soft life,” a lifestyle built around comfort, luxury and enjoying the finer things.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with wanting to enjoy life. The problem begins when looking wealthy becomes more important than actually being financially secure.

For many young people, social media has turned lifestyle into a performance. Instagram and TikTok are filled with carefully curated images of vacations, expensive dinners, shopping hauls and new cars. What we rarely see are the loans, credit card bills, unpaid debts or financial sacrifices behind some of these lifestyles.
The pressure to keep up can be overwhelming. You get a salary increase and instead of increasing your savings, you move into a more expensive apartment. You buy a newer phone, upgrade your wardrobe and start eating at more expensive restaurants. Before long, your income has increased, but your financial position has barely changed.
Known as lifestyle inflation: the tendency to increase spending as income increases. It can happen gradually and often feels harmless. After all, you worked hard for the money. But when every pay rise immediately translates into higher expenses, building wealth becomes difficult.
The problem is even more complicated for young adults trying to establish themselves. There is pressure to “look successful” before achieving financial stability. Some people would rather struggle privately to maintain an impressive public image than admit they cannot afford something.
But perhaps we need to redefine what the soft life actually means.
Does living softly mean constantly spending money? Or could it mean having enough savings to handle an emergency without borrowing? Could it mean taking a holiday without returning home, worried about how to pay the bills? Could it mean being able to say no to unnecessary expenses without feeling like you are missing out?
Financial comfort may not always be Instagram-worthy, but it provides something luxury purchases cannot always guarantee: peace of mind.
This does not mean young people should stop enjoying their money. Life is meant to be lived, and there is value in travelling, dressing well, eating out and treating yourself. Financial responsibility should not become an excuse to postpone happiness indefinitely.
The real question is whether you are enjoying your money or whether your money is being spent to convince other people that you are doing well.
The soft life should not leave you financially hard-pressed. Before upgrading your lifestyle, perhaps the better question is not, “Can I afford this?” but, “Can I afford this without compromising my future?”
Because sometimes, the softest life is not the one that looks expensive. It is the one where you can sleep peacefully because your finances are under control.
