A community of students and parents is in mourning following the tragic death of Derrick Omollo, a 21-year-old third-year student at the Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT). The young visual content creator died after falling into an abandoned 40-metre quarry while attempting to escape a robbery attempt by knife-wielding assailants on Tuesday evening.
The incident occurred near Juja township, where Omollo and three fellow students had gathered around 4:30 PM to film content in a local scenic thicket.
According to police reports, at approximately 6:00 PM, four men armed with knives confronted the group and demanded their mobile phones. Panicking as the situation escalated, the students dispersed to flee. In the desperate attempt to escape in the twilight, Omollo plummeted into an exposed, disused quarry.
Authorities confirmed that Omollo died instantly from a severe head injury and sustained fractures to both legs after hitting rocks at the base of the deep pit.
The surviving students managed to escape into the surrounding bushes, though one 19-year-old female student was robbed of her phone, and a 22-year-old student suffered a sprained arm. The assailants fled the scene shortly after the fatal fall.
Police officers arrived at the location following reports from the survivors. Omollo’s body was subsequently retrieved and moved to the General Kago Mortuary in Thika, where a postmortem examination will be conducted. Law enforcement agencies in Juja have launched a manhunt to identify and apprehend the four suspects.

Derrick Omollo was widely known among his peers as a rising TikTok content creator whose creative videos had steadily built him a vibrant audience online. News of his death has sent shockwaves through JKUAT’s student body and the broader digital content creation community in Kenya.
Friends and fellow creators have expressed immense grief online, remembering Omollo for his talent, humor, and ambition.
Safety concerns for university students and parents
The tragedy underscores urgent safety concerns regarding university student housing and off-campus leisure spots in suburban university hubs like Juja.
As young digital creators frequently venture into isolated areas seeking unique visual backgrounds for social media content, local leaders and parents are calling for:
- Greater environmental safety: Demands on local government authorities to properly fence, secure, or rehabilitate abandoned quarries and dangerous open pits surrounding urban settlements.
- Heightened neighborhood security: Increased police patrols in off-campus areas popular with university students during late afternoon and evening hours.
- Safety awareness for youth: Cautioning young people to avoid remote or unpoliced areas when creating content or spending leisure time, particularly as dusk approaches.
Parenting groups and student welfare officers are advising young adults to remain vigilant, travel in larger groups in well-lit areas, and prioritise personal safety over property during emergency encounters.
