Travelling by Train with Kids? Here Are Kenya Railways’ 6 Key Safety Rules

As families prepare for holiday travel across Kenya, Kenya Railways has issued a safety advisory reminding passengers to follow key station and train guidelines. With high volumes of commuters, children, and luggage expected at commuter rail and Madaraka Express terminals, observing these safety measures ensures a smooth and secure journey for everyone.

Here is what parents and guardians need to know to keep their families safe at the train station.

Keep a firm grip on young children

Busy station platforms can quickly become overwhelming for young kids. Under Kenya Railways’ guidelines, parents and guardians are strictly required to hold their children’s hands and keep them within sight at all times. Keeping kids close prevents them from wandering off into crowded areas or stepping dangerously near the platform edge.

Stand safely behind the yellow line

When waiting for an arriving train, always stand behind the yellow safety line marked along the platform floor. This buffer keeps travellers, especially small children, at a safe distance from approaching locomotives and draft winds created by moving trains.

Wait for a complete stop before boarding

Never attempt to board or alight from a train while it is still in motion. Wait until the train comes to a full stop and the crew gives the clear signal before stepping across the gap.

Board sequentially without pushing

Crowding around train doors creates major fall hazards. Passengers are instructed to enter one by one in an orderly line. Remind children to wait their turn patiently to keep platform movement calm and safe for everyone.

Put away mobile phones and headphones on platforms

Walking through a busy transit hub with headphones in or looking down at a screen blocks out environmental awareness. Save the screen time for the actual ride, put devices away while navigating platforms, and stay alert to surrounding activity.

Listen closely to station crew announcements

Train stewards and station staff regularly broadcast live updates regarding platform changes, boarding sequences, and delays. Paying close attention to official announcements ensures your family moves efficiently and responds promptly to any safety alerts.
