With the holiday travel season rapidly approaching, the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has issued a strict seven-day compliance ultimatum targeting public service vehicles (PSVs) and heavy commercial transporters across Kenya. The move is part of an aggressive nationwide road safety crackdown aimed at curbing reckless driving, excessive speeding, and preventable crashes during the high-density December travel period.
A festive season safety push
The timing of the directive highlights the NTSA’s commitment to passenger safety during one of Kenya’s busiest travel periods. As families prepare to travel upcountry for holiday celebrations, traffic volumes peak on major highways, elevating the risk of serious accidents.
By enforcing functioning speed limiters, the regulator aims to ensure that both long-distance passenger buses and heavy commercial freight hauliers strictly adhere to statutory speed limits, protecting commuters, drivers, and pedestrians alike.
Strict enforcement on the roads
The seven-day notice serves as a clear warning to fleet operators and vehicle owners that non-compliance will carry immediate operational consequences. NTSA enforcement officers, working alongside traffic police, will be conducting rigorous roadside inspections across key transport corridors.
Vehicles found operating with defective, uncalibrated, or missing speed limiters risk impoundment, suspension of operator licenses, and heavy penalties for owners and drivers. Passengers are encouraged to remain vigilant and prioritise registered, fully compliant vehicles when booking their holiday journeys.
