Turkana Woman Rep Cecilia Ng’itit Makes History with International Women Empowerment Award

Turkana Woman Representative Cecilia Ng’itit Ishuu has made history by becoming the first Kenyan parliamentarian to win the prestigious International Women Empowerment Award at the 3rd International Women Parliament and Iconic Women Awards 2026.

The glittering global ceremony, hosted at the Radisson Blu Water Garden in Dhaka, Bangladesh, and organised by Arena for Global Engagement Limited, brought together prominent women leaders, parliamentarians, and change-makers from around the world.

A milestone for Kenyan leadership on the global stage

The international accolade adds to an impressive wave of recognition for the Turkana legislator this year. Earlier in 2026, Ng’itit was honoured with the Thamani Africa Award as the Best Female MP in Africa, following her recognition as Kenya’s Best Performing Woman Representative at the Bobea Leadership Awards.

Her latest victory in Dhaka places her grassroots advocacy and leadership on an international platform, celebrating her tireless commitment to championing gender equality, education, and social justice.

Humble beginnings

Ng’itit’s journey to national and international prominence is a powerful story of resilience. Growing up in Loima, Turkana County, in a family facing severe financial hardship, her early life was marked by incredible obstacles. As a child, she worked in other people’s homes in exchange for food, while her mother later worked as a school cook, receiving basic food supplies in place of a salary.

When it came time to sit for her Certificate of Primary Education examinations, her family could not afford the registration fee. Undeterred, her uncle stepped in to donate a goat, which she presented to her headteacher to secure her exam registration, a pivotal moment that paved the way for her academic and political journey.

Driving grassroots impact in Turkana

Beyond the legislative halls, Ng’itit’s recognition stems from her impactful development and empowerment initiatives across Turkana County:

  • Transformative education support: Through targeted bursaries and education programs, she supported vulnerable students, including enrolling 68 students who scored between D+ and C- in their KCPE exams into tertiary institutions, covering their full tuition fees from certificate to diploma levels.
  • Economic empowerment: Her office has spearheaded economic programs, distributing business grants, fishing equipment, and agricultural tools to dozens of local community groups to foster self-reliance among women and youth.
  • Challenging harmful practices: Ng’itit has been a vocal advocate against early marriages and harmful cultural practices, supporting initiatives like the Desert Roses’ ‘Let the Girl Play’ program, which utilises sports to encourage girls to remain in school and build leadership skills.

As she brings home this historic international trophy, Ng’itit continues to shine a global spotlight on the resilience of Turkana women and the transformative power of inclusive leadership.
