Many a time, you might hear people who are now friends may have had a romantic history, but the most important question one may ask themselves before any of this is whether Exes can survive as friends without any emotional feelings resurfacing
Breaking up does not always mean two people have to become complete strangers. Sometimes, after the emotions settle, exes wonder whether they can keep the friendship they had before the relationship. But can two people who once shared romantic feelings genuinely return to being friends?
Relationship master coach, Jeff Israel Nthiwa, who works with couples navigating breakups in Nairobi, says the real question isn’t whether exes can still talk; it’s whether the romantic bond has actually been released.
It depends…
Not every breakup creates the same kind of distance. Some couples end things peacefully after realising they work better apart, while others leave the relationship carrying anger, disappointment, or unresolved feelings.
When both people accept the breakup, friendship can become possible. However, if one person still hopes to get back together, staying friends can make moving forward much harder.
“One person may have accepted the ending while the other is secretly waiting, hoping, or interpreting continued contact as evidence that reconciliation is still possible.”
Friendship needs new boundaries
Being friends with an ex cannot simply mean continuing the relationship without the romantic label. Both people need to establish new boundaries.
They may need to change how often they communicate, avoid behaviours that could create confusion and respect each other’s personal lives.
Jeff argues that friendship with an ex can’t simply be the old relationship with the physical intimacy removed. if the pattern of daily contact, emotional dependence, jealousy over new partners, or partner-like priority access continues, the relationship has ended in name only, not in practice.
A friendship can quickly become complicated when an ex expects the same attention, emotional support, or availability they received during the relationship.
Can you really move on?
One of the biggest questions is whether both people have genuinely moved on. If every conversation brings back memories of the relationship, the friendship may not be healthy yet.
Jeff suggests a practical test. Imagine your ex telling you they’ve fallen in love and are building a future with someone else, and notice what surfaces. Jealousy, resentment, or a pull to win back their attention doesn’t signal immaturity, he says; it signals unfinished emotional work.
Sometimes, taking a break from each other allows both people to process the breakup and build separate lives. After some time, they may decide whether a friendship still makes sense.
When staying friends becomes unhealthy
There is nothing wrong with admitting that friendship is not possible. If staying in contact constantly creates jealousy, arguments, sadness, or confusion, distance may be the better option.
Some relationships simply need to end completely for both people to move forward. That does not erase the good memories or mean the relationship was a failure.
So, can exes be friends?
Yes, but it requires honesty, emotional maturity, and clear boundaries from both sides. More importantly, neither person should feel pressured to remain friends simply because they once loved each other.
Sometimes exes can build a genuine friendship after the romantic relationship ends. Other times, the healthiest choice is to let each other go and continue life separately.
Ultimately, being friends with an ex is not about proving that you are mature enough to stay connected. It is about asking whether the friendship genuinely brings peace, respect, and happiness to both people.
“Friendship should be the result of emotional closure, not a substitute for it,” Jeff closes.
