Spending money on products and procedures to enhance your pout when you haven’t taken the time to properly care for them can be a waste of time and money. Here is why: If lips are dry, chapped or otherwise irritated, most plumping products will only aggravate those problems. Here are simple tips to care for your lips.

Cover them up

The sun can damage your lips just as it does your skin everywhere else, yet this is often the last place we apply (and reapply) sun protection. The first line of defense is a lipstick or gloss with an SPF of eight or above. If your favorite lipstick does not have sun protection, apply lip balm with SPF before adding color.

Keep your kisser hydrated

Any time you are without lip color, coat your lips with a balm that prevents moisture loss.

Give lips a bedtime boost

Apply balm packed with nourishing ingredients like Shea butter and/or olive oil or lanolin before hitting the sack. Your lips will feel fresher and softer in the morning.
