Cellulite, also referred to as dimpling of the skin, refers to persistent subcutaneous fat deposits beneath the skin especially the thighs and hips.  This happens when the fat cells expand and limit the space under the skin, putting pressure on the connective tissue.

Some of the risk factors when it comes to having cellulite include: age, estrogen, family history, poor circulation (a common issue in the legs), tissue inflammation, increased fatty tissue caused by weight gain, poor lymphatic drainage, loss of collagen and thinning epidermis (outer layer of skin).

While cellulite is not a life-threatening condition, some people feel insecure about it and some women opt to go for laser treatment and other medical interventions to get rid of cellulite. Cellulite is not as common in men.

If you would like to combat the condition, here are five ways to help you reduce cellulite.

1.Excercise

Since cellulite is fat, exercising helps burn it and tone the muscles. Losing body fat may naturally reduce the appearance of cellulite. Work outs emphasizing leg lifts, suats and lunges tend to be most effective.

It is important to note that exercising may not fully get rid of cellulite completely ,it reduces its appearance. All the same, aerobic exercises like cycling, dancing, hiking, running, walking and swimming may help fight cellulite too.

2.Healthy diet

A healthy diet contributes a lot to your general appearance. Its the same when it comes to cellulite. Salmon, dark berries and flaxseed may help in reducing cellulite appearance since they help break down fat cells down and strengthen the skin and connective tissue . Antioxidants and omega-3s also go a long way in breaking down fat cells.

How to know if you’re stress eating and how to stop
Biochemically ,stress eating is when your body is eating because of the stress-response hormone Cortisol that triggers cravings for pleasure or for sweet or salty indulgent foods.

3. Stay hydrated.

Keeping your body hydrated especially by increasing your water intake helps in loosening the accumulated fat by enhancing circulation and the lymphatic flow.

4.Regular massage

Massages done by a professional or someone experienced may help reduce the appearance of cellulite by draining excess body fluid, redistributing fat cells, improving circulation and plumping the skin.

Massage, however, doesn’t offer long lasting results, you need to incorporate it with a good diet.

A gentleman’s experience at Catherine Kariuki’s StepMum Brunch
The StepMum Brunch went down in style at the Zen Garden based in Lower Kabete. It was an unforgettable day for me and contrary to my fears, I was relaxed and cool and even as much as my fashion sense ‘belongs to the streets’, I fit in to the theme of the event.

5.Caffeine intake

Most cellulite fighting creams  contain caffeine as their active ingredient. Caffeine shrinks fat cells by dehydrating them. Applying these creams or taking caffeine directly may help reduce the appearance of cellulite.

Notably, the weight of a person doesn’t determine whether or not they’ll get cellulite. Cellulite can affect anyone, and it is not a disease. It is a completely normal and benign condition.
