Irony: Mother beats son in Bomet East Parliamentary Contest

  • PublishedAugust 11, 2017

Bomet East is in a frenzied mood after the wife of former minister Kipkalya Kones, Beatrice Kones defeated her first-born son, Kipng’etich Kalya Kones in the parliamentary seat race.

Beatrice Kones ran on a jubilee party ticket while her son ran on a Chama Cha Mashinani’s ticket.

Kones earned another term in parliament after beating eight other opponents. Her son emerged fourth in the hotly contested race. It was one of the most watched parliamentary duels in the country for the simple fact that it pitted members of a nuclear family against each other.

Village elders had earlier disputed the move by Beatrice Kones saying a son should take over after the father.
