Kenya receives more Moderna vaccine doses from the US

Kenya has received the second batch of the Moderna vaccine from the United States. The 880,320 doses were received at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport on Monday by health Chief Administrative Secretary(CAS) Dr. Rashid Aman.

“This donation will be of help during this time when we are conducting a robust vaccinations campaign in the country. Kenya has received more than five million vaccines in total,”Rashid said on receiving the vaccines.

The CAS also pointed out that the 141,600 doses of the Johnson and Johnson vaccine received last week were procured by the government and some more 200,000 vaccines will be received this week, while 1,000,000 Johnson & Johnson vaccines will be received next week.

He further assured Kenyans that the vaccines deployed in Kenya have been approved by World Health Organization(WHO) and that no vaccine is superior to the other.

The CAS was accompanied by Mark Bulterys, the country’s CDC  Director who said that more donations will be sent to Kenya. This is the second consignment of the Moderna vaccines, bringing it to a total of 1.76 million doses of received from the US.

This vaccine consignment comes in the wake of the Ministry of Health’s aim of attaining the 10 million vaccinations target set by President Kenyatta by December this year so that the country can relax some covid-19 prevention protocols.

Currently, there are three types of vaccines in the country, Johnson & Johnson, AstraZeneca, and Moderna. As at now 2,357,000 Kenyans have received their first dose of the covid-19 vaccine.
