Looming Strike at JKIA

  • PublishedFebruary 5, 2019

The Kenya Aviation Workers Union (KAWU) has called its members to strike against the Kenya Airways planned takeover of Jomo Kenyatta International Airport.

The strike which is set to begin at midnight will involve airport ground staff, flight attendants, cargo operators and other support  service  workers including duty free shop attendants.

This strike comes after Kenya Airways made a proposal to Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) to manage and develop the airport’s operations for 30 years.

The deal dubbed Privately Initiated Investment Proposal (PIIP), seeks to expand KQ’s service offerings to include ground handling, warehousing, maintenance, catering and cargo services. According to KAWU, this move will render many jobless.
