National Police Service Cracks Down on Political Violence
A violent crackdown by Kenya’s National Police Service has resulted in 14 arrests and one fatality across Kisumu and Nyahururu. The clashes, which involved the burning of property and disruption of political rallies, have prompted a strict warning from authorities as political tensions mount ahead of the 2027 General Election.
The National Police Service (NPS) has launched a strict crackdown on political lawlessness. This move follows separate incidents of violence in Kisumu and Nyahururu that left one person dead and several others injured. Authorities have arrested 14 suspects in connection with the clashes. They also issued a stern warning to political figures against inciting electoral chaos.
Clashes in Kisumu turn fatal
In Kisumu, tension escalated swiftly when violent confrontations erupted between two rival political groups. The skirmishes resulted in one fatality and multiple injuries.
According to police reports, the chaos also led to significant property damage. Rioters burned nine motorcycles and stoned a police vehicle before law enforcement managed to contain the situation.
Following a swift tactical response, officers apprehended eight suspects. The police are currently holding them in custody awaiting arraignment. Officials also confirmed that teams are actively hunting down the remaining perpetrators.
Disruption and stone-pelting in Nyahururu
Simultaneously, a separate group in Nyahururu attempted to disrupt a lawful political rally by pelting attendees with stones. The attack caused minor injuries to several members of the public. This included a resident identified as Joseph Gitau, who sustained chest injuries. Doctors treated and discharged him.

Officers arrested six suspects at the scene. The NPS categorically dismissed rumours circulating on social media that claimed officers had opened fire during the scuffle. They clarified that police fired no shots.
Police issue warning ahead of 2027 polls
Political temperatures are steadily rising ahead of Kenya’s 2027 General Election. Because of this, the NPS emphasised that political status or affiliation will not shield anyone from the law. “No person, regardless of social status, political affiliation or public office, is above the law”, the NPS stated. The service pledged to conduct impartial, evidence-based investigations to bring all sponsors and perpetrators of violence to justice.
