This list of fashion designers in Kenya is by no means comprehensive or in any order. However, it highlights 10 of the designers who have had a positive impact in the industry, and continue to show promise.

1. Yvonne Odhiambo –  AfroStreet Kollektions

 

Known simply in the fashion streets as Yvonne Afrostreet, Yvonne is an African print virtuoso. The fact that she has dressed celebrities like, Flavour, Yemi Alade, Vanessa Mdee and Sauti Sol shows just how good she is at what she does.

2. Aulgah Nato

Aulgah is more contemporary in her approach to fashion. Her pieces can find a home on the Nairobi Fashion Week ramps just the same way they will be at home at Paris Fashion Week. Her rise to fame was faster, owing to the fact that she injected fresh blood into the then almost-redundant Kenya fashion scene.

3. Anyango Mpinga – Anyango Mpinga

Anyango Mpinga’s outfits are whimsical just as they are timeless. Her pieces are quite unique that they can be found in stores in Europe.

4. Melanie Wachie – Afrostreet by Melanie

Sharing the same concept with Yvonne Afrostreet, Melanie breathes life into ankara outfits. They are her plaything, but by the time she is done with a fabric, it is a masterpiece.

5. Neomi Ng’anga – Style by Neomi

 

For a long time, there were no fashion lines that were dedicated to the plus-size women. Kenyan actress Neomi Ng’ang’a efficiently stepped in to bridge that gap. She had a lot of success making custom outfits with quality fabrics. She went further and launched Miss Plus Size World Kenya, a beauty pageant meant to celebrate  and encourage women to embrace their curves.

Jamil Walji’s designs are as bold just as they are vibrant. If there is one designer who is in touch with the red carpet fashion, it is Jamil. He studied fashion in Malaysia, and his prowess is very obvious in the way his outfits owns the runways of different fashion weeks. Little wonder then, that he is one of the most prolific fashion designers in Kenya.

The founder of KikoRomeo is a household name as far as Kenyan fashion is concerned. Kiko Romeo essentially meas ‘Adam’s Apple’ in Swahili. Besides her love for contemporary African designs and the Maasai shuka, she is the founder of FAFA – Festival of African Fashion and Arts.

Wambui Mukenyi – Wambui Mukenyi

A list of Kenyan designers without the mention of Wambui Mukenyi is no list at all. We can never forget the time she launched her bridal line on a plane, something not a single other designer has been able to do in Kenya. She is what other designers dream to be.

Ashok Sunny is the epitome of bespoke suits for both the ladies and the gents. He can weave pretty much any fabric into a suit, and that makes him an instant standout.
