At least 33 bodies have been exhumed from a mass grave at a cemetery in Kericho County, in an operation carried out by a multi-agency team on Tuesday.
Officials initially reported that 14 bodies were buried at the site, but the recent exhumation revealed a significantly higher number. Of the remains recovered, 25 were children, while the rest were adults. Investigators also found six separate body parts, including upper and lower limbs.
“Recent findings at Kericho Cemetery have revealed multiple human remains under circumstances suggesting different timelines and possible external sources,” officials said. The bodies were in varying stages of decomposition, indicating they were buried at different times. Early observations suggest some remains may have originated from mortuaries.
The exhumation was supervised by the Director of Homicide, Martin Nyuguto, alongside a government pathologist representing Chief Government Pathologist Johansen Oduor.
Preliminary reports confirm that eight of the bodies were adults. All remains have been moved to a mortuary for detailed forensic examination. Experts will work to establish the cause and manner of death and identify the deceased. Authorities are also investigating whether any criminal activity occurred beyond irregularities in burial procedures.
On March 23, 2026, two suspects appeared before the Chief Magistrate’s Court in Kericho. The hearing, filed under a Miscellaneous Application, requested custodial and exhumation orders to facilitate the ongoing investigations.
The court approved the requests for 30 days, allowing law enforcement to complete the exhumation and further forensic assessments.
Investigations are ongoing as authorities continue working to identify the deceased and determine the circumstances surrounding their deaths.
