Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja’s administration has appointed youth activist Calvince Okoth, popularly known as Gaucho, as a member of the Board of Management at Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital. This appointment is for a three-year term.

Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital is a busy Level 5 public health facility located in Nairobi’s Eastlands area. It serves many densely populated neighbourhoods including Kayole, Dandora, Korogocho and surrounding communities. The hospital handles a high volume of patients, particularly for maternity and general medical services.

Gaucho is widely known for his contributor roles in movements such as Bunge la Mwananchi. He has publicly expressed gratitude to Governor Johnson Sakaja, President William Ruto and figures like Ida Odinga for the opportunity.

Public reactions

The appointment has triggered mixed reactions, mostly on social media. Critics have raised concerns about Gaucho’s qualifications for the position. They argue that oversight of a major public hospital requires expertise in healthcare administration, medicine or management. Some have pointed to his background in political activism rather than professional health sector experience and questioned whether the appointment prioritizes political loyalty over competence.

Gaucho has stated that he will work hard to prove himself in the role and help address the challenges faced by ordinary wananchi who depend on Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital.

The appointment forms part of a broader reconstitution of boards for several Nairobi county hospitals by the county government.
