At Kenya’s celebrated Nakuru Girls High School, a love story unfolded. It all began when Sammy Maangi, a charismatic preacher and media personality, was leading a panel discussion, not knowing that this ordinary Saturday and a photobomb would change his life forever. Sammy, a communication consultant, and Dr Michelle Batsheba Maangi, a veterinary surgeon, share their intriguing love story.
Roots
As Sammy scanned the crowd, his attention was caught by the looks of a very beautiful, bright, and vivacious student, Michelle Batsheba. In addition to her aphroditic features, Michelle’s intelligent contributions to the discussion left Sammy saying, “Thank God, I’ve seen her. That’s my future.”
Fate, however, had other plans that day. Sammy did not immediately get an opportunity to approach Michelle. Obviously, because the huge group of students who were equally impressed with his words made it impossible. But Michelle, feeling an inexplicable pull towards the handsome speaker, took matters into her own hands.
“I photobombed,” she admits and laughs mischievously, adding, “I forced myself into his picture.”
Unknowingly, that seemingly insignificant moment ignited their love story.
Two years passed, and the world found itself in the grip of the COVID-19 pandemic. It was during this time of isolation and reflection that Sammy stumbled upon Michelle’s photo on Facebook.
He stalked her profile. What he saw reminded him of how he felt on that specific Saturday when he first set his eyes on true beauty that is Michelle. Sammy gathered his courage and sent a message as simple as, “So, we are friends.”
Michelle, who had secretly admired Sammy from afar, was thrilled to receive his message. “I knew him. Had seen him on TV. Found him very attractive, and I wouldn’t have minded if he was my boyfriend,” she confessed, a blush creeping into her cheeks.
As if fate planned it all, Michelle’s mother had been a fan of Sammy’s youth show on Hope Channel Kenya, unknowingly cultivating their future relationship.
Courtship
Their first date was nothing short of magical. “The first meeting has got to be a banger,” Sammy explains with a grin. Despite the pandemic restrictions, he was determined to make it special, and it turned out to be so. It was an unforgettable picnic date that left them bonding for hours. A connection that transcended their digital interactions.
As their relationship blossomed, both Sammy and Michelle knew they were in it for the long haul. Their courtship wasn’t without challenges. Sammy remembers a particularly difficult period.
“We had a string of arguments for close to five months,” he says, adding that their commitment to each other and their shared faith saw them through these rough patches.
Michelle shares one of the things that drew her to Sammy: “He would pray over everything. Even after we argue, he will say, ‘Let’s pray about it so that we don’t end up in a similar situation.’”
Sammy was equally impressed by Michelle’s character and intellect. “I wanted to be with someone who is learned,” he explains, “so that we are going to have intellectual discourse, not just emotional.”
Their shared values and ability to resolve conflicts strengthened their bond.
After two years and seven months of dating, Sammy decided it was time to propose. He planned an elaborate surprise with the help of Michelle’s friends and family. Under the guise of a choir event in Nakuru, Sammy orchestrated a beautiful proposal that caught Michelle completely off guard.
“I didn’t suspect anything,” Michelle laughs as she recounts the day. “They opened the door, and surprise! It’s my proposal! My whole choir was there, my brother, my nephew, his brother, and all our close friends had travelled from Nairobi to Nakuru. It was a huge surprise!” she recalls.
Married!
The Maangis’ wedding was a joyous celebration of their love and shared heritage. They began with the traditional Kisii erorano (dowry negotiation) ceremony, bringing both families together. Sammy recalls with a smile, “We embraced our Kisii heritage during our wedding.”
The ceremony itself was a vibrant affair that blended modern elegance with traditional customs. Held at a scenic tea estate in Kisii County, the event featured local choirs singing in Ekegusii, their mother tongue. Michelle stunned everyone in a gown that incorporated Eshishe fabric, while Sammy beamed in a suit accented with the same pattern.
“I wanted our wedding to reflect who we are,” Michelle shares, adding, “It was important to honour our roots while celebrating our future together.”
The reception was a feast for the senses, showcasing the best of Kisii cuisine with a health-conscious twist – a nod to Michelle’s background in nutrition. As they exchanged vows, surrounded by loved ones and the lush green hills of their homeland, Sammy and Michelle knew they were embarking on the greatest adventure of their lives together.
Today, Sammy and Michelle Maangi are happily married, creating content together and inspiring others with their love story. They focus on family, lifestyle, and marriage in their work, drawing from their own experiences to help others navigate relationships.
“We are doing this together,” Sammy says, looking lovingly at his wife. Michelle nods in agreement, adding, “If I am not helping you with your spiritual goal, why are we dating?”
Their journey from a chance meeting at a high school event to a lifelong commitment proves that sometimes, the best love stories start with a simple hello – or in their case, a photobomb. The Maangis’ story is a testament to the power of faith, perseverance, and the courage to seize opportunities when they present themselves, even if it means forcing yourself into someone’s picture.
