Halloween weekend brings incredible parties, spooky costumes, and plenty of flowing drinks. If you are heading out for a night of festivities and have already decided to drink, the goal isn’t necessarily to cut yourself off entirely; it is to stay in control so you can enjoy the night without regretting Sunday morning.
Pacing yourself on a holiday night out is all about smart strategy. Here are practical tips to help you moderate your alcohol intake while still having a great time.
Eat a solid meal before heading out
An empty stomach is the fastest track to getting way too intoxicated, way too fast. Alcohol is absorbed much quicker into your bloodstream when there is no food in your system.
- Eat a hearty meal featuring foods like chicken, rice, avocado, or pasta before you leave the house.
- If you are running late and miss dinner, grab a substantial snack or order food as soon as you arrive at the first venue.
Set a drink limit before the night begins
It is much harder to make sensible choices after a couple of drinks are already in your system. Decide on your absolute limit before you even put on your costume.
- Pick a realistic cap (for example, three drinks for the entire night) and stick to it.
- It is easy to lose track when socialising in a crowded, dark venue, so take a quick second to track each drink.
Alternate every alcoholic drink with water
This is the ultimate secret weapon for surviving a heavy party night. Dehydration is the primary culprit behind severe hangovers, and chugging water all night keeps your body hydrated.
- Whenever you get a cocktail or a beer, order a large glass of water as well.
- Finish your water before you take your first sip of alcohol, or use the water to pace out your drinking over the course of an hour.
Opt for lower-alcohol or mocktail mixers
You do not need heavy liquor or high-gravity beers all night to feel like you are part of the celebration.
- Switch to a light beer, a spritzer, or soda water with lime halfway through the evening.
- Ask the bartender to make your favourite cocktail with half the usual amount of alcohol, or mix in extra juice and soda.
Avoid the round trap
When you are out with a large group celebrating Halloween, someone will inevitably shout, “Let’s do a round of shots!” This is a fast way to lose control of your intake.
- You don’t need to make a big deal out of it, just grab your water or current drink and say, “I’m pacing this one!”
- Sticking to your own individual purchases gives you total control over what is in your glass and how fast you finish it.
