The Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) on April 15, 2026, issued an addendum revising fuel prices downward, just a day after implementing record-high rates, following a government decision to reduce Value Added Tax (VAT) on petroleum products from 13% to 8%.

In a press release issued on Wednesday evening, EPRA stated that the revised maximum retail pump prices will take effect from April 16, 2026, to May 14, 2026. The adjustment follows Legal Notice No. 70 dated April 15, 2026, in which the National Treasury lowered VAT, prompting a recalculation of fuel prices.

“EPRA has recalculated the maximum retail pump prices that will be in force from 16th April 2026 to 14th May 2026 taking into account this revised Value Added Tax rates,” EPRA Director General, Dr. Joseph Oketch, said in the statement.

As a result, Super Petrol and Diesel prices in Nairobi will decrease by KSh 9.37 and KSh 10.21 per litre respectively, while Kerosene prices remain unchanged. The subsidy on Kerosene has also been reduced from KSh 108.10 per litre to KSh 96.56 per litre.

The revision comes barely 24 hours after EPRA announced steep increases that pushed Super Petrol to KSh 206.97 per litre and Diesel to KSh 206.84 in Nairobi, marking historic highs. At the time, the regulator attributed the surge to rising landed costs of imported petroleum products driven by global oil market volatility and geopolitical tensions affecting supply chains.

While the earlier increase sparked concern among consumers and transport operators over rising costs of living, the latest adjustment offers modest relief, though prices remain significantly elevated compared to previous months.

EPRA noted that the updated price list is detailed in Annex I of the release, with a breakdown for Nairobi provided in Annex II. The authority’s acting Director General, Dr. (Eng.) Joseph Oketch, confirmed the changes in the statement dated April 15, 2026.
