Joe and Jill Biden's incredible love story
Saturday, 7 November, Joe Biden was elected 46th President of the United States of America. The journey to his consequent victory was full of hurdles, uncalled-for tweets and false claims, but Joe kept the faith nonetheless. That unrelenting and immovable faith may just be the reason why he is currently married to the First Lady, Jill Biden.
Jill and Joe Biden met on a blind date when Jill was still in college. Even though they got on well from the get-go, Jill was not sure about Joe. In fact, when Joe proposed to her, she said no. Four times.
Jill Biden, while speaking to Vogue, said,””I was a senior, and I had been dating guys in jeans and clogs and T-shirts, he came to the door and he had a sport coat and loafers, and I thought: “God, this is never going to work, not in a million years. He was nine years older than I am!”
“But we went out to see A Man and a Woman at the movie theatre in Philadelphia, and we really hit it off,” she added.
Prior to meeting Joe, Jill had been married at 18, and had already gotten divorced by 24. She thus wanted to make sure Joe was the one before committing. Furthermore, Joe’s first wife, Neilia and their daughter Naomi, had died in a car accident. She needed to be sure that her marriage to Joe would last, so the surviving boys, Beau and Hunter, did not lose a second mother figure.
In addition to that, she was concerned about losing her identity and career. Jill Biden is a dedicated English teacher who, despite being Second Lady on Joe’s appointment as Vice President, did not stop teaching. She continued her job as professor of English at Northern Virginia Community College, saying “Being a teacher is not what I do but who I am”.
Luckily for Joe,his fifth time proposing was his last time.Jill gave him the yes he wanted.Joe went to Jill’s flat on his way to the airport in 1977 and said: “Look, I’ve been as patient as I know how to be but this has got my Irish up. Either you decide to marry me or that’s it, I’m out. I’m not asking again.”
They married at the United Nations chapel in 1977, taking Joe’s sons Beau and Hunter on their honeymoon. They welcomed a daughter, Ashley, in 1981.
Ladies and gentlemen, good things come to those who keep the faith.
