Joseph Kuria Irungu aka Jowie has taken issue with the inhumane conditions in his cell and mistreatment by police officers. Through his lawyer Wilson Nandwa, he is now suing the State for the same. The lawyer asserts that his client’s life is in danger and that the court should protect him.

“The applicant is being subjected to inhumane treatment in a cell infested with snakes and a dirty blanket full of bedbugs and lice,” reads part of the affidavit.

Jowie has allegedly suffered physical assault in the hands of some of the police officers, one who has been identified as Mr. Lekulal. The same officer ostensibly threatened to  ‘throw him into a hole that he would never come out of’.

Joseph Irungu is a key suspect in the most heinous murder of Monica Kimani. DNA samples taken from the scenes of crime in the murder confirmed his interaction with the deceased during her last moments.

Jowie has now gone on a hunger strike to protest the mistreatment, as his lawyer seeks to have the court allow him to seek medical attention from Kiambu Hospital.
