Nyeri Senior Resident Magistrate, Pauline Chesang was on Monday detained following the murder of her husband, Robert Chesang.

The magistrate  who was arrested alongside three police officers, a driver and a senior police officer in Baragoi, Samburu will be detained for nine days at Athi River Police Station

The five detainees were not allowed to take their pleas as the police made a request to be given more time to finish their investigations.

The embattled magistrate’s lawyer, Assa Nyakundi pleaded with the court to release her on bail, given that she has an acute asthmatic condition and she has two children who entirely depend on her.

“This is an area she has worked and has sent people to jail. It is not just those she has sent to jail that are a threat to her, even their relatives are and the list is endless. it is important that the first respondent is released on bail,” said Nyakundi.

The prosecution however maintained that she is the link between Mr. Chesang and his killers and her release, or that of any other detainees could interfere with the investigations.

Mr. Chesang was killed on February 17 when gunmen raided his home and opened fire through the window, killing him on the spot. The motive for his murder has not yet been identified. However, the police are chasing two possibilities: domestic dispute or job-related reasons.

The case will be heard on March 12.
