The government will no longer hire nurses to replace those who exit the system through normal means such as retirement and resignation.

Such vacancies will be filled on contract terms as revealed during the Sixth  National and County Government Coordinating Summit  held in Sagana State Lodge yesterday.

“We have resolved that any vacancies for recruitment of nurses arising from normal attrition at both levels of government will be filled on contract terms,” said the Health CS Sicily Kariuki and Council of Governors Chairman,  Wycliffe Oparanya in a statement.

This was among the eight resolutions made by the inter-governmental team in response to the perennial crisis in the health sector.

The summit also expressed concern over the perennial nurses ‘strikes and the importance of finding a lasting solution to the problem.

The government also intends to increase the number of health workers from nine per every 10,000 people to 14 at an estimated cost of sh2.1 billion.
