Police officers linked to Kianjokoma brothers' death suspended

Inspector General of Police(IG), Hillary Mutyambai, on Monday revealed that all officers linked to the death of two brothers from Kianjokoma in Embu county have been suspended. In a tweet on Monday, August 16, Mutyambai said that the independent police oversight authority(IPOA) had completed its investigations and forwarded the file to the director of public prosecution.

“I assure you that justice for the two Kianjokoma brothers will be served, but this can only only be done if we allow the proper due process to take place with concrete evidence that can stand trial in court,” the IG said in the tweet.

The two brothers were arrested on August 1, 2021 for allegedly flouting night curfew regulations at Kianjokoma shopping center and their bodies later found at the Embu level 5 hospital morgue.

The death of the two siblings, Benson Njiru, 22, and Emmanuel Mutura, 19, sparked protests in Embu County as civilians demanded justice for the two promising brothers for about a week,during which a police vehicle was torched and a civilian killed in the process. Kenyans online also called for swift action in arresting the perpetrators for the extrajudicial killings, bombarding the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI)pages with protest messages such as #JusticeForKianjokomaBrothers

The IG also sent his condolences to the family and friends of the two brothers who were laid to rest last week on August 13, 2021 in one grave at their parents home in Kithagari village.

A postmortem done on the two indicated that they died of multiple head and rib injuries.
