Kenya Schools Reopening Date: Ministry Clarifies Term 3 Schedule

The Ministry of Education has clarified the opening dates for the third term of the 2026 academic year following reports circulating online suggesting that the reopening dates for schools and teacher training colleges had been changed.

In a press statement issued on Wednesday, August 19, 2026, Cabinet Secretary for Education Julius Ogamba said the academic calendar for basic education institutions and teacher training colleges remains unchanged.

According to the Ministry, basic education institutions will reopen on August 24, 2026, and remain in session until October 23, 2026.

Teacher Training Colleges will also reopen on August 24, 2026, with the third term running until November 6, 2026.

The clarification comes after social media platforms and other channels circulated information purporting to show changes to the academic calendar for Term III.

The Ministry said the information was misleading, urging parents, teachers, learners and members of the public to rely on official communication from the Ministry and its authorised channels.

“Parents, teachers, learners and members of the general public are advised to strictly rely on the Ministry’s official communication channels and officers for accurate information,” the Ministry said.

The Ministry further confirmed that national assessments and examinations will proceed as scheduled, in line with the timetable issued by the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC).

The clarification means learners in basic education institutions are expected to report back to school on Monday, August 24, as previously scheduled, with no change to the approved 2026 academic calendar.

The Ministry has consequently urged the public to disregard unverified information circulating online and seek confirmation from official government channels before acting on changes to school dates or examinations.
