Bring your ceiling to life with gypsum

The construction industry has undergone significant changes over the years with contractors going for affordable, environment-friendly and artistic products. This has seen the rise of gypsum boards as the preferred material in making ceilings as they meet the above criteria. Here’s why you too should consider it.

Just as the type or colours of walls and flooring make a room attractive, so does the ceiling. The ceiling can make a style statement as it affects the feel and look of a room, as well as the safety and comfort. There are numerous materials that are appropriate for making ceilings and they include wood, plaster and plaster board, metal and tiles.

Gypsum falls under the plaster and plasterboard material and it is a soft sulphate mineral mainly mined as a fertiliser. It is also the main component in many forms of plaster, wallboard and blackboard chalk. Gypsum can remain in its powder form and is referred to as plaster of Paris when in this state or can be turned into gypsum boards, which has many uses including making ceilings, partition boards and dry walls.

A gypsum ceiling is essentially a ceiling under a concrete ceiling and it has redefined how living spaces can be designed as it comes in multiple forms. The gypsum boards are attached to the ceiling beams with screws or nails and finished off.

Gypsum ceilings have several advantages. For instance, they are lightweight and give a monolithic appearance, which offers a uniform ceiling surface without visible grids or perforations. Its versatility allows it to satisfy a wide range of architectural designs.

Gypsum ceilings are also fire and moisture resistant and ventilation ducts and other services are also accommodated in the plenum. It also has sound proofing quality meaning it reduces sound transmission through it.
