Chinese national caught on video caning man to remain detained
A video went viral of a Chinese national caning a man, inspiring rage among Kenyans who beheld it. An investigation by the Directorate of Criminal Investigation has since identified the Chinese national as Deng Hailan. He is a chef at a the Kilimani restaurant, while the man receiving the beating was a Kenyan man, Simon Osieko. He received the corporal punishment for coming late to work.
Four Chinese nationals were nabbed in the DCI swoop, all with shady immigration statuses. The other three have since been released while Deng remains in police custody. He has been charged with assault and causing bodily harm, for which he will be held for three days as further investigations abound.
Mr Osieko later revealed that it was not the first time he had been assaulted before, and that Deng had had a special cane made specifically for punishing his staff. He went on to say that being the jobs were hard to come by, he and his colleagues have had to suffer the brutality of their boss for months. Even after being caned, his boss went ahead and fired him, yet he could hardly sit from the beatings he received.
The video was recorded by another colleague who said he was fed up by their mistreatment, but knew the other staff were too scared to speak up. Thus he recorded the video.
