Four people have died of suspected food poisoning, while 67 others taken ill after attending a dowry ceremony in Kieni constituency, Nyeri last Thursday. Among the dead is the mother of the groom.

Negative cholera tests

The food is said to have been outsourced from Kitengela, Kajiado county. The deaths were reported on Monday. Nelson Muriu, Nyeri County Director of Medical Services, said the residents who attended the ceremony had cholera-like symptoms. However, the rapid diagnostic tests ran on two patients for cholera turned out to be negative.

The ceremony was estimated to have 250 people in attendance. According to Dr. Muriu, the situation has been contained while the doctors are still trying to get some clinical notes on cholera bacteria.

The victims who lost their lives are said to have died from dehydration.
