Government warns of looming drought in 10 counties

The government has warned of an impending drought in parts of North Eastern Kenya. Speaking in Naivasha on Sunday, Devolution Cabinet Secretary Eugene Wamalwa said that the National Drought Management Authority (NDMA)  has new data that indicates the current drought situations in counties could get worse between August and December 2021.

The ten counties include Isiolo, Wajir, Lamu, Marsabit, Garissa, Kilifi, Samburu, Tana River, Turkana and Mandera. The NDMA data also indicates that the number of affected could rise in the coming days.

However  Wamalwa said that the government “is working around the clock to assist families in these drought affected counties”.

The CS also noted that the state released sh559 million in July through the Hunger Safety Network  that targeted 100,000 families in the regions affected by drought.

Wamalwa also said that the government is constructing mega-dams in West Pokot, Turkana and Marsabit that are on the finishing stage and will be used curb perennial water shortage in the region.

He spoke after he attended  a consultative meeting with members of parliament from Turkana and Marsabit to discuss the challenges in their regions.
