National police service issue update on abductions

National police service issue update on abductions
  • PublishedJanuary 7, 2025

The National Police Service (NPS) has issued a press statement updating the public on four specific cases of missing persons who have since been found and reunited with their families.

In late December 2024, youths were reported to have disappeared under mysterious circumstances, causing uproar among citizens who were demanding to know their whereabouts.

In the statement released on Monday, January 6, NPS highlights ongoing investigations into the missing persons reported, as concerns about the safety of citizens, especially youths, continue to rise.

“Bernard Kavuli Musyimi, who was reported missing at Ngong, presented himself at Moi’s Bridge police station and is assisting the investigators with further information,” said Police Spokesperson Resila Onyango in the statement.

Adding, “Following media reports that Billy Mwangi, Peter Muteti, and Rony Kiplangat, who were reported missing in Embu police station, Kabete police station, and Thogoto police post respectively, have reunited with their families, we wish to assure the public that our officers will reach out to them and their families and give them the necessary support as we seek further information to assist ongoing investigations.”

She also stated that the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) is currently investigating all reported cases of missing persons, with several cases pending before the courts and others still under active investigations.

According to reports, at least seven cases of abductions were reported within the month of December, most of them being from Nairobi, Kiambu, and Embu counties.

Human rights organisations and activists have since taken to different streets in the country to raise the alarm over the growing trend, demanding the release of the abductees with immediate effect.

Consequently, they have pointed out that the possible links of some of the incidents are politically motivated or related to criminal gangs targeting vulnerable individuals.

Despite these updates, there are still lingering concerns about the identity and motives of the abductors, bearing in mind that the NPS denied allegations of conducting the abductions.

Citizens have expressed frustration with the slow pace of investigations, while human rights groups have called for more transparency and accountability from law enforcement agencies.

As cases of missing persons continue to be reported across the country, questions remain about whether the police are doing enough to prevent such incidents and whether criminal syndicates or rogue elements may be behind the wave of abductions.

Citizens have been urged to remain vigilant and work closely with law enforcement to ensure the safety of their loved ones.
