Njoro Girls’ High School Closed Indefinitely Following Student’s Death
Nakuru County’s Njoro Girls’ High School has been closed indefinitely after unrest erupted following the death of a Form Four student.
The deceased, 18-year-old Brenda Akinyi, passed away at Nakuru Teaching and Referral Hospital after reportedly falling ill while at school. The cause of her death has not yet been established. Police have confirmed that an autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday, February 3, 2026.
Tensions escalated on Monday as parents and local residents demonstrated outside the school, demanding accountability over the circumstances surrounding Brenda’s death. Police intervened to disperse the crowd after protests intensified, resulting in a brief standoff.
Brenda’s family has accused the school administration of negligence, alleging that she did not receive prompt medical care. Relatives claim they were informed of her condition too late, despite living near the school and being in a position to respond earlier. According to the family, Brenda had been unwell for several days and was only treated with painkillers, raising questions about the timeliness and adequacy of care.
In response to the unrest, the school’s management announced an indefinite closure to help de-escalate tensions and allow investigations into the incident to proceed.
Some parents who joined the protests alleged that Brenda’s death was not an isolated incident, claiming other students had previously died under similar circumstances. They have called for an independent inquiry into how the school handles student health emergencies.
Police have confirmed that investigations into the incident are ongoing, and further updates are expected following the autopsy results.
Parents and the public are encouraged to stay informed and connected as more information emerges.
