Organising and Storing Your Holiday Décor Safely to Use Again Next Year

Organising and Storing Your Holiday Décor Safely to Use Again Next Year
  • PublishedDecember 27, 2025

Once the holidays are over, many parents are left staring at tangled lights, fragile ornaments, and decorations piled into random boxes. While it is tempting to pack everything away quickly and forget about it until next year, a little organisation now can save time, money, and frustration later.

Properly storing your holiday décor not only keeps it in good condition but also makes next year’s decorating far easier, especially for busy families.

Start with a simple sort

Before packing anything away, take time to sort through your decorations. Separate items that are broken, worn out, or no longer used. Letting go of decorations that have outlived their purpose prevents clutter and creates space for items you truly enjoy.

This is also a good moment to involve older children by letting them help decide what stays and what goes. It teaches responsibility and care for shared family items.

Clean before you store

Holiday décor often carries dust, wax, glitter, or food stains. Wipe ornaments gently, shake out tree skirts, and ensure items are completely dry before storing them. Storing decorations while dirty or damp can lead to mould, unpleasant smells, or permanent damage.

For fabric items such as stockings or table runners, a quick wash and proper drying goes a long way in preserving them.

Protect fragile items

Breakable ornaments need individual attention. Wrap glass and delicate items in tissue paper, newspaper, or soft cloths. If possible, store them in compartmented boxes or egg cartons to prevent movement.

Label boxes clearly so everyone in the household knows which ones require careful handling.

Tame the tangle

Christmas lights are notorious for tangling. Wrap each string around cardboard, a hanger, or an empty paper towel roll before packing it away. This simple step prevents knots and reduces the risk of damaged wires.

If a set of lights is faulty, dispose of it now rather than discovering the problem next December.

Store smart, not just anywhere

Choose a cool, dry place for storage. Avoid areas prone to moisture or heat, such as leaky roofs or damp floors. Plastic storage bins with tight lids offer better protection than cardboard boxes, especially in homes with limited space.

If storage space is tight, stack boxes by category, tree decorations, lights, outdoor décor, to make retrieval easier next year.

Label everything clearly

Clear labelling saves time and stress. Write what is inside each box and, if helpful, which room the décor belongs to. Parents juggling many responsibilities will appreciate not having to open every box to find one item.

Make it a family routine

Turning décor storage into a family activity helps children learn organisation skills and care for belongings. It also closes the holiday season intentionally, rather than abruptly.

The Takeaway

Taking time to organise and store holiday décor properly is an investment in future peace of mind. Next year, you will spend less time untangling, repairing, or replacing items and more time enjoying the season with your family.

A little effort now ensures your holiday memories are preserved, not packed away in chaos.
