Pope Francis (Jorge Mario Bergoglio), the first Latin American leader of the Roman Catholic Church, died on Easter Monday, April 21, at his residence in Vatican City. He was 88.
The Vatican announced that the pontiff succumbed to a cerebral stroke that led to cardiac arrest. His death has triggered a global outpouring of grief, with world leaders sending tributes and Vatican officials preparing for a historic state funeral set for Saturday, April 26.
President William Ruto led Kenyan leaders in mourning the Pope, praising him as a beacon of humility and compassion who inspired millions through his moral conviction and unwavering commitment to justice.
“We join the Catholic Church and the global Christian community in mourning the passing of Pope Francis,” Ruto said. “He will be remembered for a life dedicated to serving the Lord, the Church, and humanity. His strong ethical and moral convictions inspired millions across the world, regardless of faith or background.” He concluded.
The Pope’s body lies in state at St. Peter’s Basilica, where thousands of mourners continue to pay their final respects. Vatican authorities reported that more than 20,000 people visited within the first day of public viewing, prompting extended visiting hours to accommodate the crowds.
A funeral Mass, to be presided over by Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re, is scheduled for 10:00 a.m. on Saturday in St. Peter’s Square. In accordance with his personal wishes, Pope Francis will be buried at the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore in Rome, making him the first pope in over a century to be interred outside the Vatican.
Across the globe, nations with significant Catholic populations, including the Philippines, Spain, and India, have declared periods of national mourning. Flags are flying at half-mast, and several public events have been postponed in respect for the departed pontiff.
Among the dignitaries expected to attend the funeral are U.S. President Donald Trump, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. Prince William will represent King Charles III.
Born Jorge Mario Bergoglio in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Pope Francis was elected as the 266th pope in March 2013. His papacy marked a shift in tone for the Church, with his focus on inclusivity, environmental justice, and economic equality. He was especially noted for advocating for the poor and marginalised, addressing modern issues with openness and empathy.
With his passing, the Vatican enters a period known as sede vacante — a time when the seat of the Pope is vacant. Preparations are already underway for a papal conclave, expected to begin in early May, to elect his successor.
As tributes continue to pour in from every corner of the world, Pope Francis is being remembered not only as a spiritual leader but also as a global moral voice who sought to unite people of all faiths under the banner of peace and compassion.
