Raila Odinga names Martha Karua as running mate ahead of August polls
Azimio la Umoja One Kenya presidential flag bearer Raila Odinga has picked Narc-Kenya leader Martha Karua as his running mate in the upcoming General Elections.
Speaking while making the announcement at the Kenyatta International Convention Center, Mr Odinga expressed confidence in the choice of Karua as his running mate.
“I needed a true Joshua on my corner, one who will not be a turncoat. After a long search and reflection, together with consultation, I have arrived at the decision that the holder of this position must be a woman,” he said.

Karua was chosen from a list of 11 candidates who were vetted by a selection panel, which narrowed the field to three candidates and forwarded their names to Raila Odinga for a final decision.
Those shortlisted for Azimio la Umoja running mate slot were: Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka, Martha Karua (Narc-Kenya), Sabina Chege (Jubilee Party), Peter Kenneth (Jubilee Party), Ali Hassan Joho (ODM), Stephen Tarus (National Liberal Party), Peter Munya (CS, Agriculture), Wycliffe Oparanya (Deputy ODM leader) and Lee Kinyanjui (Nakuru Governor).
Among the vibrant Kenyan women leaders, the name Martha Karua cannot go unmentioned. Karua is a well-known Kenyan political leader, human rights advocate, and reformer with a strong commitment to social justice, the rule of law, and the development of accountable institutions.
Odinga also praised Karua for her resilience and fighting spirit. “She is a fighter, not a quitter. This woman has a beautiful soul as exhibited by her love for her children and grandchildren. She will make a great co-worker.”

However, the decision by Raila Odinga has seen Wiper Party Leader parting ways with the Azimio La Umoja after failing to secure the alliance’s presidential running mate slot. Musyoka will be vying for the top seat on a Wiper Democratic Party ticket.
