Sometimes, we look at someone else’s life and think, I wish I had that.

A beautiful home. A successful business. A flourishing career. The seemingly perfect relationship. Freedom. Confidence. The life that, from the outside, appears to have everything we want.

But we rarely stop to ask: Would we be willing to pay the price for that life?

Social media has made this even more complicated. We see the holiday but not the years of saving. The new house but not the sacrifices. The promotion but not the years of rejection and self-doubt. The successful business but not the sleepless nights, financial risks and failures that came before it.

We see the outcome, not the process. And so, we compare our behind-the-scenes with someone else’s highlight reel.

We want the reward without necessarily wanting the journey. We want the success but not the pressure. The freedom but not the responsibility. The recognition but not the criticism. The platform but not the scrutiny.

Every life comes with a price we may never see. Someone may envy your independence while you long for support. One may admire your success while you are exhausted by the responsibility that comes with it. Someone may wish for your life while you are busy wishing for someone else’s.

We rarely know the full story. This does not mean we should stop aspiring to more. Other people’s lives can inspire us. But inspiration is different from comparison. You can admire someone’s journey without believing that your own is inadequate.

And while we are busy wishing for the lives of other people, we may fail to notice that someone else is looking at our lives and wishing for the very things we take for granted.

The family. The opportunity. The home. The job. The freedom. The ordinary moments.

So dream. Aspire. Want more. But remember: before you envy the life someone else has built, remember that you may not be prepared to pay what it cost them to build it.

Sometimes, we do not envy someone’s entire life. We only envy the part of it we can see.
